Project Objective and Approach
The (W)hole Project aims to overcome socio-economic differences in Ankara’s Hıdırlıktepe district, enhance permeability between social classes, and create a shared common ground. Rather than consumption-oriented goals, the project focuses on recreational spaces that prioritize human and spatial interaction, along with sensory and historical experiences.
By analyzing the pronounced socio-economic contrasts among Ankara’s neighborhoods, the goal was to establish a more permeable structure between different social classes. In line with this, Hıdırlıktepe—integrated with Ankara’s historical fabric and part of its urban silhouette—was selected as the project site. Instead of events and spaces confined by the boundaries of capitalism, a recreation approach that resonates with the essence of humanity was embraced, emphasizing the interaction between humans, the body, and space.
The project discusses sensory elements that enrich the spatial experience, following historical traces and drawing inspiration from an exhibition method that sparked interest, developing an imaginative approach rooted in Hıdırlıktepe’s identity.
Historical Layers and Design Goals
Guided by Hıdırlıktepe’s unique topography, the project seeks to explore Ankara’s rich history, investigate its urban layers, and uncover stories concealed by capitalism. The aim is not only to honor Ankara’s past but also to offer visitors a multi-layered space where history and geography intersect.
By elegantly weaving historical context with the natural landscape, the project envisions a timeless place inviting people to discover the spirit of Ankara. This transformation aims to breathe new life into Hıdırlıktepe, turning it into a more inclusive and reflective urban intervention.
Spatial Experience and Material Use
To enrich the spatial experience, stone textures are used to reveal physical layers in the design, sometimes complemented by sloping grounds to heighten engagement. The design emphasizes curiosity and the journey to the exhibition through transitions between spaces.
The first corridor serves as an adaptation stage, while the second, steeper corridor engages directly with the topography and its textures. A light shaft offers two exits, and an informative stone museum is planned to display andesite and basalt.
As visitors approach the main exhibition, angled walls separate it from the corridor. Smaller exhibition areas surround the main space, with ramps offering a more individualized experience. A central wall guides circulation and distributes visitors to the surrounding volumes.
Digital Exhibition and Terrace Connection with Topography
At the convergence point of the entire journey, the digital exhibition invites visitors to reconnect with humanity’s history and essence. Featuring 65 meters of digital screens spanning 380 degrees, it introduces a new display method. Visitors can explore via fixed platforms, ramps, a moving platform, and an independent elevator, with perception recalibrated every five meters.
The exhibition concludes with terraces featuring a 10-meter opening framing views of Ankara Castle. The project culminates at Hıdırlıktepe’s peak, where the topography merges to offer unmatched vistas of Ankara.
A Panoramic View of History
At Hıdırlıktepe’s highest point, visitors enjoy a panoramic view of the city skyline and Ankara Castle. This space is more than a viewing terrace—it invites exploration of the deep connection between the city’s history and its topography, offering a new perspective where traces of the past intersect with the present fabric.
Light Shafts as a Spatial Experience
Light shafts along the circulation corridor create varying atmospheres, offering unique experiences shaped by the space. The direction, intensity, and reflection of light continuously redefine perception, creating moments of stillness even in motion. These dynamic light interactions engage visitors with the texture of the space, enriching the exhibition experience.
Experiential Continuity Between Underground and Surface
The corridor blurs the experiential boundaries between the underground and the surface, revealing the spatial layers of the site. Light shafts filter through different levels, making subterranean volumes visible, while the organic flow of the topography invites visitors into a constantly shifting spatial experience.
The Language of Walls: Layers of Space
The journey towards the peak blends art and space while allowing visitors to sense the topography’s texture. Entering from the dynamic Bentderesi Street, a canopy and urban square open toward the Hacı Bayram axis, integrating seamlessly with the terrain.
The design decisions for the corridor and digital exhibition create a dynamic and exploratory experience. Spatial fractures are shaped at times by topography and program, and at other times by the urban axes they align with. Defining key viewpoints such as Ankara Castle and the Hacı Bayram axis, these walls frame urban terraces and green spaces. Adapting to programmatic needs, the walls take on different functions throughout, revealing a unique character in each encounter.
